Around 17,000 Boeing engineers and technical specialists have rejected the company’s proposed four-year contract and authorised the SPEEA union to call a strike. With the current contracts set to expire in early October, a strike could begin as early as October 7 if the two sides fail to reach an agreement. Pay increases and the cost of living in the Seattle area are among the key issues in the negotiations.
Boeing has begun implementing contingency plans for a potential work stoppage, posting vacancies for temporary engineers and technical specialists. SPEEA members are involved in aircraft design, testing, data analysis and certification, making their roles particularly critical in the event of a strike.
A prolonged strike could affect aircraft currently in production as well as the ongoing certification programmes for the Boeing 737 MAX 10 and 777-9. However, no strike has yet been called. The vote gives union leadership the authority to launch a strike if no agreement is reached after the existing contracts expire.
